‘This is the place:’ putting the past on the map 1 The quote is attributed to Brigham Young on first sighting the Salt Lake Basin in 1847. However, close inspection of the documentary record on the matter shows that Young did not say these words, or at least was not reliably reported as doing so; rather, the phrase gained canonicity through repetition—see R.C.
