A non-invasive means to effectively restore normothermia in cold stressed individuals: a preliminary report1 1 Conflict of Interest Disclosure: A patent has been issued for this technology (United States Patent #5,683,438, “Apparatus and method for core rewarming of mammals experiencing hypothermia,” Inventor: Dennis Grahn, Assignee: Stanford University, Date of Patent: Nov. 4, 1997) and Stanford University has entered into a licensing agreement with Aquarius Medical Corporation, Scottsdale, Arizona, for the commercialization of the technology. Included in the license is a royalties agreement that grants Stanford University a percentage of the net sales of the technology, which will be shared by the University, the Department of Anesthesiology, the Department of Biological Sciences, and the inventor. Dennis Grahn and John Brock-Utne are also serving as consultants to Aquarius Medical Corporation to assist in the development of a commercially useful device based on the technology.
