A series novel Schiff bases derived from 2-mercapto-3-formyl quinoline/2-hydroxy-3-formyl quinoline with 1,8-diaminonaphthalene (DAN) and its corresponding transition metal complexes of Co (II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn (II) were synthesized, characterized by elemental analysis, spectral (IR, 1H-NMR, Mass, UV-Vis, Fluorescence, ESR, TGA) and magnetic studies. The results indicated that all the metal complexes possess octahedral geometry. The measured molar conductance in DMF indicates that the complexes are non-electrolytic in nature. These Schiff bases and metal complexes have been screened for antibacterial, antifungal activities by MIC method and further evaluated for anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity by carrageenan induced paw oedema and tail flick methods in rats.
