Contents: The concept of a systems engineering ecology and related concepts are discussed; and their relationship with enterprise architectures is examined. A brief review of the evolution of systems maturity for software applications is presented. The role of standards and architectures is discussed, and ongoing efforts in the area of enterprise information technology architectures are reviewed. The concept of a foundation program is discussed, and several examples from the U.S. Department of Defense are presented. Suggestions are presented for future investigation into measures for optimizing the value of information systems to the enterprise.
