Open landfill has been a main method for wastes disposal by local authorities in Malaysia. Gaseous emissions from open landfill often cause offensive odour which disturb the residents within its neighbourhood. Due to lands restriction, there are inadequate buffer zones between the landfill sites and the residents or sensitive receivers. The objective of this paper is to present the responses on odour annoyance of the sensitive receivers living around Ampar Tenang open landfill site. The study was conducted by a survey method using questionnaire distributed among the sensitive receptors within 5 km radius of the Ampar Tenang open landfill. The findings have shown that majority of the sensitive receivers have negative perceptions of the odour. About 58.7 % of the respondents were exposed to a strong odour intensity emitted from the landfill. 92.0 % of them agreed that the odour have strong relation to meteorological factors. Finally, 93.3 % of them have rejected the landfill to continue operations in their area due to some of the risks they have been exposed to. |
