Liver anatomy has always been the same. However, its interpretation has changed during time according to the development of imaging and surgery. Cantlie introduced a new concept on liver anatomy using the term ―lobe‖ in a different way. Segmental anatomy, introduced in the middle of the XXth Century has a cornerstone in Couinaud’s studies. The fact that anglosaxons followed Cantlie’s concept about right and left lobes even in segmental anatomy after the description by Goldsmith & Woodburne, while other authors followed the french terminology in which Couinaud’s segmentation is based, lead to confussion and ambiguous terms. In 2000, the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association Terminology Committee developed a global, unified terminology. |
