A general characteristic of the plants is to be sedentary, i.e. to grow up at the same place of their germination. This fact limits the plants to escape from attacks, which is the main mechanism of defense in nature. However, this limitation has been partly overcome using other mechanisms of defense, such as chemical communication with its environment. This phenomenon is known as allelopathy, and the agents in charge of that communication are called allelochemicals. The aim of this paper is to review the concepts introduced to define the allelopathic phenomenon, the strategies and methodologies to study it in the laboratory, as well as, research strategies in the way of searching new molecules for the development of natural herbicides |
