Inhoud: The analysis of the root systems of Norway spruce seedlings growing on various substrate types confirmed the differences in the root morphology and quantified the relationships between selected root system parameters. The specific root length, specific root surface area and specific root tips number and their relationships with the total root system biomass of the seedlings growing on the coarse woody debris (CWD) or the mineral soil were compared. We found an exponential relationship between the total root system weight and specific root length, while its shape and strength varied according to the substrate type (r2 = 0.46−0.78). The strongest relationship was detected between the specific root tips number and the root weight. The data were fit to exponential function and the proportion of explained variance reached 66.0−98.5 %. The decrease of the investigated variables with the increasing total root system weight is faster on the mineral soil than on the CWD. It means that the larger seedlings growing on the CWD keep a higher proportion of the fine physiological active roots and likely have a more extensive root system.
