Inhoud: Twelve sugarcane varieties were evaluated under dryland conditions on a sandy loam soil from the tropical dry forestlocated at west Monagas State, Venezuela, in order to select highly adapted varieties to that environment. The experimentwas set up under a completely randomised block design, with three replications; The experimental plots consisted on threefurrows, 1,5 m apart and 10 m length. Planting was made al the beginning of the rainy season. The evaluated varieties were:PR 61-632, JA 64-19, B 75-49, B 75-226, V 72-11, V 74-7, V 71-68, V 75-6, B 75-403, B 64-278, C 323-68 and C 1057-73. The trial was conducted for three seasons, and the fertilization rate plan was made taking into account the soil analysisand the plant requirements, for each seasons. The total phosphorus dose was applied at planting time, the nitrogen andpotassium were splitted in three doses applied at: planting time, 45 and 90 days after planting. The plots were harvestedafter twelve months. Variables evaluated were: Tons of cane for hectare (TCH); Pol cane percent (PPC); Tons of Pol perhectare (TPH) and Efficiency (EF). According to the statistical analysis (Tukey Mean Separation Test) the outstandingvarieties with respect TCH and TPH were: PR 61-632 and C 323-68. Most of the varieties were statically similar regardingto equals to PPC and EF means. V 75 – 6 reached the highest yield for PPC (15,6) and it also was the most efficient, whileB 75-49 gave the lowest PPC yield and the least efficiency among all the varieties in the trial.
