Recent estimations indicates that in the Monagas state grows about 2,566 species of vascular plants, representatives of 204families and 1,105 genera, values that support a relatively high floristic diversity in spite of the low diversity of vegetablecommunities. More than 80% of that species are represented in the Agronomy herbarium at Universidad de Oriente,Maturín, institution that has performed a very significant role in the study of the flora of this zone since its foundation. Thebotany exploration level that has been reached in savannahs and mountains is significantly superior (> 70%) with regardswampy plains and piedemonte. Future investigations should be performed on the last topic as well as on the taxonomicknowledge of certain angiosperms families, very well represented in the Monagas state, but so far poorly collected, such asOrchidaceae, Bromeliaceae, Euphorbiaceae and Arecaceae, among others
