Contents: Plant-parasitic nematode populations vary depending on climate and edaphic factors. Due to those reasons, we examined a plant-parasitic nematode population associated with plantain crops (Musa AAB) cv. Hartón from a tropical dry forest at the southern area of Maracaibo Lake. Three small farms from 10 different sectors where plantains have been cultivated traditionally were selected; soil (1000g) and root (25g) samples were taken and plant parasitic nematode populations were identified and quantified using Cobb modified method and Baermman funnel. The identified genera were Pratylenchus, Helicotylenchus, Radopholus, being the most common Pratylenchus. Wounded and necrotic roots were observed when the plant-parasite nematode population densities where higher. Continuing with this research identifying the nematode species, setting pathogenicity test experiments and studying the population dynamic of those species is recommendable.
