Marandu</span></em> foram estudadas sob diferentes períodos de armazenamento (quatro, cinco e dezesseis meses após a colheita). Utilizaram-se sementes intactas e nuas. A obtenção de sementes nuas deu-se através da remoção manual dos seus revestimentos. Foram verificados ainda a viabilidade, o teor de umidade e a embebição de água das sementes. Nos experimentos de germinação estas foram tratadas com ácido giberélico (GA3), ácido abscísico (ABA) e a combinação destas substâncias (0,1 e 1,0 mmol.m-3), mantidas à temperatura de 28oC ± 2, em BOD. A germinação foi avaliada diariamente durante cinco dias, sendo consideradas germinadas as sementes que apresentaram a protusão da radícula nesse período. Os resultados mostraram que, independente da idade, o revestimento das sementes inibe a sua germinação e as sementes submetidas a prolongado período de armazenamento (dezesseis meses), embora tenham mantido o teor de umidade e a viabilidade, apresentaram baixo percentual de germinação, não respondendo ao tratamento com GA3. Sementes armazenadas por cinco meses mostraram maior poder germinativo e foram mais sensíveis ao tratamento com ABA em relação ao GA3.</p> <p class="western" align="justify">PALAVRAS-CHAVE: ABA; braquiária; GA3; germinação; sementes.</p> <!-- @page { margin: 2cm } --> <p class="western" align="justify">The aim of this work was to study the effects of seeds coat, storage period and hormonal treatment on seed germination. The seeds of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu were stored for four, five and sixteen months post harvesting and the study was carried out using intact and denuded seeds. The seeds were denuded by manual removal of its coats. The seed viability, its moisture level and water uptake were also tested. For germination experiments the seeds was treated with gibberellic acid (GA3) and abscisic acid (ABA) (0.1 and 1.0 mmol.m-3) and kept at 28oC ± 2 in BOD. The analysis of germinated seeds was carried out over five days and the emergence of the axis (radicle) was the parameter used to recognize the seed germination. The results showed that the seed coat inhibits its germination and seeds submitted to extended storage period (sixteen months) although had conserved its moisture and viability, showed low germination percentage and it did not respond to GA3 treatment, whereas seeds stored for five month showed more sensitive to ABA than to GA3 treatment.<br /><br />KEY-WORDS: ABA; <em>Brachiaria brizantha</em>; GA3; germination; seeds.</p>
