We offered a general overview on organic farming in Europe, on the present state ofRomanian organic agriculture: exports, imports, operators, types of activities, land use. Nowadays,agricultural policy no longer resembles the one initially designed. Because organic agriculture combinestradition, innovation and science to benefit environment, because it offers a good quality of theproducts and contributes to increase the interest in rural space for all involved, it represents a keyissue for a sustainable development. Abandonment of farming and inappropriate agricultural practicesthat appeared as consequence of lack of specialized knowledge or limited financial resources, haveadversely affected the biodiversity and have led or increased soil erosion. These are only a few reasonsto give a major interest of this sector.
