Contents: This study addresses the control problem of a synchronous generator using sliding mode control techniques. The mathematical model of the synchronous generator is first transformed into a form that facilitates the design of nonlinear control schemes. Then, a static sliding mode controller is proposed. To alleviate the chattering problem associated with the static sliding mode controller, a dynamic sliding mode controller is developed. Both control schemes guarantee the convergence of the states of the system to their desired values. The simulations results indicate that both controllers work well. Moreover, the simulations results show that both control schemes are robust to changes in the parameters of the system and to disturbances. In addition, the performance of the controlled system is compared to the performance of the system when a conventional Auto-Voltage Regulator (AVR) is used in conjunction with a Power System Stabilizer (PSS).
