Contents: Twenty and eighteen different brands of biscuit and sweet wrappers respectively from Nigeria were analysed for the first time for their levels of lead and cadmium in this study. Present results show that concentrations of lead were generally higher compared with cadmium for both sweet and biscuit wrappers. The mean concentrations of lead and cadmium in sweet wrappers varied between 1520.0 ± 0.11 and 2.40 ± 0.01 μg g-1 and between 1.64 ± 0.02 and 0.36 ± 0.01 μg g-1, respectively. The levels of lead and cadmium in biscuit wrappers ranged from 8294.0 ± 0.36 to 14.4?0.01 μg g-1 and from 2.04 ± 0.01 to 0.24 ± 0.01 μg g-1, respectively. There are no guidelines for the levels of lead and cadmium in food wrappers; however the levels reported in this research are quite high and may give cause for concern.
