Characterization of a Campus Network Traffic

Title: Characterization of a Campus Network Traffic
Author: Abdul Waheed
Appeared in: Journal of applied sciences
Paging: Volume 3 (2003) nr. 1 pages 40-46
Year: 2003
Contents: This paper studies the network traffic of a campus network in a developing country that lacks several key properties of network infrastructure, which are often taken for granted elsewhere. Infrastructure limitations involve lack of high bandwidth connections to the Internet high latency satellite links to the Internet, and limited bandwidth shared by a growing number of academic and commercial users. In addition to these limitations, security requirements make it mandatory that all traffic should flow through a proxy. We study this traffic at the edge of this campus network using proxy server logs over one month (Feb. 2002). Our study indicates that the WWW traffic characteristics generally follow well- known heavy tailed distributions with only a couple of exception. Our analysis also indicates that majority of traffic if destined to remote locations, resulting in excessive latency.
