Athletes must develop a range of cognitive and behavioural coping skills to manage the stressors they face in competitive settings. The most widely used coping model in sport psychology is based on Lazarus and Folkman´s transaction process perspective that distinguishes between two functional dimensions of coping: task-oriented coping and emotion-oriented coping. Based on this theoretical framework and empirical observations a model for coping with stressful events in sports, that includes control of emotions, organization of information reception, planification of responses and appropriate actions, has been proposed. Athletes who use maladaptative coping strategies or fail to interpret sport-related events accurately and to react in a rational manner, will experience chronic stress that frequently leads to reduced performance quality and, eventually, to burnout and sport dropout. Therefore, athletes who participate in competitive sports need to employ effective psychological skills and coping strategies in order to satisfy their expectatives and to improve their performance. Although different questionnaries aimed to identify coping strategies used by athletes have been developed in the last few years, establishment of the most adequate instruments to determine under which situations cognitive and behavioral coping strategies reach its optimal efficacy is still required.
