Inhoud: Background: This study find out the geographical epidemiology of lymphoid neoplasia in Cali and southwest Colombia, with special attention to ATL. Study design and methods: Information of the RPCC is used, of individuals with LNH and LL among 1987 and 1996 coming from the Pacific coast. Also material was obtained of tissue included in paraffin of patients with LNH from the department at Pathology of the University Hospital, for investigating sequences provirales for HTLV-I using technical biomolecular. Samples of blood were also obtained of native of Tumaco volunteers from low, medium and high socioeconomic levels, being analyzed it pairs antibodies against HTLV-I/II with a test of bound imunoabsortion to enzymes (ELISA, Abbott®) and confirmed by Western blot. Results. The rate of global incidence for LNH is at least twice more than that leukemia in both sexes. The rate of global incidence for LNH has not shown remarkable changes; while the LL has increased in both sexes, but, more notorious in women. The rate of incidence for LNH increases with the age in both sexes. Five of 75 cases of linfoma were positive for sequence of HTLV-I for PCR, in the specimens tissues and none of the patients had test serologic for HTLV. Eighteen of three hundred fifty six people were positive serologic for antibodies against HTLV-I (5.1%) in Tumaco. Conclusions. Indeed, several ATL cases would be missed, as demonstrated by the finding of HTLV-I in whom the association had not been suspected. The seroprevalence of HTLV-I in Tumaco is higher in females than in males, as previous described. It will be worth to continue investigating intercurrent such as infections or other environmental factors that would facilitate a fast progression of carriers to ATL in inhabitants in the area.
