This paper's goal is to read Ernesto Quiñonez's novels Bodega Dreams (2000) and Chango's Fire (2004) in the light of the picaresque genre. In order to do so, the analysis shows how the usage of a first-person narrative, the treatment of discourse and speech, and the employment of orality are features that let us align these US Latino texts with those of the picaresque canon, especially the classical Spanish novels that define the genre. Other picaresque aspects of Quiñonez's novels seen in this essay are marginality of their characters, their drive to climb in the social ladder, and their frustration at not attaining these goals. |
