AN ASTOUNDING TREASURE: DUAL LANGUAGE EDUCATION IN A PUBLIC SCHOOL SETTING

Title: AN ASTOUNDING TREASURE: DUAL LANGUAGE EDUCATION IN A PUBLIC SCHOOL SETTING
Author: Susana C. De Jesús
Appeared in: Centro journal
Paging: Volume 20 (2008) nr. 2 pages 193-217
Year: 2008
Contents: Data from a seven-year public school case study is used to demonstrate the impact of dual language instruction on student achievement. The school was in an Empowerment Zone. Low SES students were in the program; 98 percent were on free or reduced lunch. Student outcomes and program strengths are discussed, showing benefits for both English language learners (ELL) and English dominant (ED) students. Implementation problems are analyzed. Characteristics of successful programs are identified. Data match consistently high outcomes of national longitudinal dual language studies in accelerating student achievement, reaching levels above the achievement levels of English-only students in mainstream classes. Discussion of education in Puerto Rico focuses on equity, quality of instruction, impact of English, and the benefits of implementing a program with dual language features to improve public education and reduce the achievement gap.
