Lupeol (1), stigmasterol (2), 4-hydroxy-3-methoxycinnamic acid (3) and trans-p-coumaric acid (4) were isolated from the n-hexane and chloroform soluble fractions of a methanol extract of the root of Albizzia lebbeck Benth. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated as by extensive spectroscopic studies, including high field NMR analyses. Different partitionates of the methanol extract exhibited mild to moderate antimicrobial activity and varying degrees of toxicity. This is the first report of isolation of compounds 1-4 from this species. |
