Ternatin, a tetramethoxyflavone extracted from the Brazilian medicinal plant Egletes viscosa L. was evaluated in rat model of colitis induced by acetic acid. Ternatin (25 and 50 mg/kg) administered intrarectally, 24 h and 2 h before colitis induction significantly attenuated the colitis associated mucosal damage and the increases in myeloperoxidase activity and malondialdehyde level, which reflect polymorphonuclear infiltration and lipid peroxidation, respectively. The study confirms the anti-inflammatory action of ternatin, which at least, in part, involve an ant-oxidative mechanism. (BLACPMA 2 ( 4): 48 ¿ 51 (2003) |
