Contents: Polypyrrole (PPy) coated Pt, Au and glassy carbon (GC) electrodes as indicatorelectrodes for hydronium ions (H3O+) - pH electrodes - in aqueous solutions have been studied.Their potential response towards pH of aqueous solutions is quite similar with that of the pHglass electrode. These electrodes are in solid state and, in principle, do not involve redoxreactions. Their potential is determined by the surface charge density due to the protonation anddeprotonation of the PPy film surface covering the solid electrode surface. It seems that theybehave as a capacitor. The deprotonated form of PPy has been used for pH 1.81 to 7.00, whilethe protonated form has been used for pH 7.00 to 11.92. PPy coated metallic (Au, Pt) and GCelectrodes are recommended for direct and indirect pH determinations, as well as forelectrochemical titration of neutralization.
