Mesmo no período clássico (séculos VI e V a.C.), no auge das suas realizações artísticas e intelectuais, o grego, ainda, era um homem que se encontrava num estado de conflito, provocado pelas mudanças que estavam ocorrendo na sociedade. Apesar das mudanças na maneira de conduzir a forma de viver, na forma de organizar e administrar asociedade, esse homem não se desprendeu por completo do seu passado. Ainda, havia, na polis, vestígios da antiga comunidade gentílica, tanto na forma de pensar, como de viver. A manutenção de crenças da antiga religião, que já não eram mais condizentes com a novaorganização social, provocou instabilidade na sua comunidade. Percebendo o conflito entre a “velha” ordem gentílica e a “nova” organização social da pólis, Sófocles buscou, em sua obra, mostrar como deveria ser o homem para viver na cidade-Estado, utilizando, para isso, a representação do conflito entre o pai e o filho; o velho e o novo nas suas peças. E propôs um homem que deveria buscar, no conhecimento, as soluções para os conflitos vividos, causadas pela dependência e submissão a preceitos da antiga religião e à crença num destino, para assumir-se, enquanto um ser responsável, por seus atos e seu futuro.Even during the Classical Period (6th-5th centuries BC), at the peak of their artistic and intellectual achievements, Greeks were immersed in a state of conflict owing to profound changes within society. In spite of changes in the manner of living and in the organizationand administration of society, the average Greek citizen failed to completely break away from the past. Traces of the ancient gentilic community were still remained in the polis in the way of thinking and living. Beliefs in the ancient religion did not apply to the new social organization and destabilized the community. When Sophocles perceived the conflict between the old secular order and the new social organization of the polis, he reflected in his literary works on the manner the Greek citizen could live within the contemporary citystate. The representations of conflicts between father and son, the new and the old were thus featured in his plays. The playwright imagined a man who, through knowledge, tried to solve the conflicts experienced, brought forth by a submission to ancient religion andbelief in fate. This new man was accountable for his acts and his future.
