Inhoud: It is not rare to find mentions to Isaac Newton’s ideas in sources and material devoted to Physics teaching anddissemination to a broader public. Some of these texts and internet websites suggest that Newton had anticipated lightdual behavior in his optical studies. The main evidences for this sort of affirmation rely on the fact he assumed acorpuscular model for light and used it to explain optical phenomena with periodic properties. These historicalaccounts use Newton’s discussion on colored rings in thin films and his concept of “fits of easy reflection and easytransmission” of light published in his book Opticks. The present paper brings a historical study based on examinationof Opticks and other Newton’s works on optics. The analysis of primary and secondary sources shows that Newtonwas refractory to any possibility of an undulatory model for light. Moreover, it indicates that “fits” were not aforesight of wave-particle duality. This paper intends to show, among other things, that we must regard the context inwhich ideas of past scientists were developed and avoid considering them as anticipations of currently acceptedconcepts.
