The present work is part of a larger project aimed at refining a theoretical model for physics problems comprehension.This model takes into account the increasing abstraction and formalization necessary to achieve a solution in typicalend-of-chapter problems. An instrument has been designed on this basis to analyze written records [1, 2]. In this work,this instrument is used, together with the theoretical model, to study the solving process of one problem, as carried outby 70 students during an exam of an Engineering career in a Spanish University. Results show that students generaterepresentations of the situation posed which have varying degrees of abstraction, and that each of these constructionssignificantly correlates with the corresponding representation of high degree of abstraction. The mark given by theteaching staff grading the tests also significantly correlates with the representation of a higher degree of abstraction. |
