AIM: Orthodontic intrusion is a common treatment approach in managing orthodontic esthetic and functional problems, including gummy smile and deep bite. This review presents the principles of orthodontic dental intrusion concerning analysis of functional and esthetic indications, mechanotherapy for intrusion of posterior and anterior teeth, as well as histological changes occurring at the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone following application of intrusive forces. This paper concisely describes the methods of dental intrusion study encountered in the literature and analyzes the clinical and histological side effects related to the application of vertical forces on teeth, such as extrusion of neighboring teeth and apical resorption, respectively. |
