Shifting collections from print to electronic materials has been costly and challenging. The Big Deal collection of journals offered one way to consolidate costs and provide wide access. The William H. Welch Library at Johns Hopkins University entered into several Big Deals to provide users with electronic materials but faced serious problems in financing such items. By entering into collaborative arrangements with other Johns Hopkins libraries and eventually with a consortium, the Welch Library was able to maintain its same level of serials expenditures while dramatically increasing access to a wide spectrum of journals. doi:10.1300/ J383v04n01_02 |
