Systemic interventions for cancer patients and their family members are relatively underexplored in the medical family therapy literature. For many couples, a cancer diagnosis represents loss, isolation, and dependency that activate attachment behaviors. In this paper, we use attachment theory as a framework to describe couple interaction patterns and behaviors, especially proximity seeking, following a cancer diagnosis. Two case examples are provided to illustrate proximity seeking from secure and anxious-avoidant attachment styles in couples facing a recent diagnosis of cancer. We then apply Emotionally Focused Therapy, a systemic, attachment-based intervention, to a distressed couple and insecurely attached couple. Finally, clinical implications for medical family therapy practice are discussed along with suggestions for future research.
