Contents: The reflecting team has been a valuable clinical tool for more than 15 years yet there are no studies to explain how it works and what ingredients are most effective. Twenty-eight couples participated in a one-time consultation using a reflecting team format. Ten different types of reflections were used. The four reflections that couples heard most often and found most helpful can be characterized as empathic and supportive. This finding was interpreted as consistent with the construct of therapeutic alliance. These four reflections also correlated with better marital adjustment scores on the Locke-Wallace. Although men and women found the reflections equally helpful, men reported hearing more reflections than women.
