The purpose of this study was to investigate what seemed to be the unique experience in the marital relationship of couples who met as children (12 years old and younger), or adolescents (13 to 18 years of age), and later dated and married. This research explored whether there was a difference in the quality of the connectedness of these couples as a result of their longstanding relationships that began before marriage while they were still children or adolescents. The sample included 5 such couples who were in counseling and an additional 5 couples who met the criteria, but were not in counseling. Using a semi-structured interview instrument, these 10 couples were asked to give a tape-recorded narrative of how they met, and how their relationship progressed through dating, marriage, and to their present marital state. The findings indicate that these couples have developed a strong connectedness that originated in their early friendships, spanned personal losses and evolved into close relationships at the present time in spite of the fact that some couples experienced marital dissatisfaction and dysfunction. Clinical implications are discussed based on research findings.
