Inhoud: This exploratory study examined the therapeutic alliance in solution-focused marital therapy utilizing a qualitative design. Eight couple clients were interviewed conjointly about their experiences in treatment after they had terminated therapy, and the themes generated from the interviews were analyzed using a grounded theory approach. Results suggest that the clients were pleased, overall, with the therapist, but they were not always pleased with therapy or the outcome of therapy. The individual members of the couples were not always unified in their perception of therapy, either positively or negatively. Closely related to this finding was the additional component of client expectations regarding therapy or the therapist. If these expectationsmost of which were unspokenwere not met to the satisfaction of one of the members of the couple, the therapeutic process was not perceived as very effective. It was also revealed that some of the formulaic questions common to solution-focused therapy were perceived as having limited impact; this was deduced from the clients' lack of adequate recall pertaining to their answers to these questions.
