Teamwork is an essential element in the success of Crisis Negotiations as it is practiced by police. However, little in police training or experience prepares the typical officer to function as part of an effective team. This paper outlines elements of a negotiating team. It looks at a working definition and the characteristics of a team. It emphasizes the importance of having both a team leader and manager. Finally, it discusses some methods of building an effective, cohesive negotiating team. By planning and training, most negotiating teams can become efficient, effective units that save lives. |
