Mini Medical School is an informative and entertaining public education program designed to familiarize participants with medical terminology and provide insight into both biomedical research and advances in patient care. Participants learn directly from experts how their body works and how they can take an active role in maintaining their own health. However, in spite of all the interest and enthusiasm participants exhibit in learning more about health care, very little attention is given to how the public finds its health care information. By conducting classes on Internet searching and evaluating online health care information, librarians can bring Mini Medical School into greater context for participants while reaching out to and creating long-lasting relationships with the community. This article describes the importance of participation in Mini Medical School programs by health science librarians and how the library can develop such a program if none exists. |
