Libraries in health care institutions play a leading role in knowledge-based information management. In response to the multicultural trends in society and to the challenge presented to libraries in the changing health care environment, librarians need to develop cultural competent skills to work in a multicultural environment. This article explores the concept and importance of cultural competence in libraries and librarians in relation to health care systems. The author argues that it is important for libraries and librarians to become culturally competent in order to provide services responsive and relevant to the changing information needs of health care professionals and health care institutions. The article is focused on how cultural awareness or sensitivity can be applied to many services or functions in libraries. It also includes methods to implement cultural competent services, strategies for individual librarians to apply to develop cultural awareness and sensitivity, and research areas worthy of investigation. |
