Evidence-based practice (EBP) is an evolving art, affecting all practitioners in healthcare. Hospital librarians can expect increasing requests for assistance to support EBP, though fulfilling that demand may be impeded by the underdeveloped state of the literature. Nursing presents a challenge in the paucity of evidence-based literature written especially for that discipline. The role of the hospital librarian in assisting nurses is threefold: first, framing the question; secondly, searching the literature, and thirdly, evaluating the literature. This article addresses the historical background of EBP, guidelines for finding quality literature, recommended web-based resources, and collection development implications.
