Inhoud: The proposal for society to be the driver for scientific literacy is welcome, but change requires an analysis and understanding of the roots of our persistent difficulty in incorporating useful knowledge into the secondary school curriculum for students interested in some form of post-secondary education. How does such a relatively small number of scientists come to be seen to wield such extensive influence on the science curriculum? A political strategy for change that includes potential alliances with appropriate resources is also needed. The power of the university scientists over science curricula is related to their ability to control the kinds of courses accepted for university entrance and the interests of parents and students in preserving opportunities for occupations requiring university degrees. Given changes taking place in the economy, the idea of enlisting industry as an ally to legitimate alternative forms of knowledge and pathways for careers is discussed.
