Designed to assist with the management of e-resources, electronic resource management (ERM) systems are time- and fund-consuming to purchase and maintain. Questions of system compatibility, data population, and workflow design/redesign can be difficult to answer; sometimes those answers are not what we'd prefer to hear. The two primary functions of ERM systems are to collocate information about electronic resources and to facilitate communication between the employees of a library that handle e-resources, but can these functions be performed efficiently through other methods? This article explores cheap (or free) alternatives to purchasing an ERM system, taking a close look at how Web 2.0 technologies such as wikis, blogs, and Google Docs and Spreadsheets can assist with the management of e-resources. Readers may be surprised to learn just how much can be accomplished using home-grown methods of e-resource management. |
