The main purpose of the present study was to perform an in-depth study of the most common reading errors of a group of first grade. Greek students and compare them with pre-exiting findings on English speaking children. The students attended rural and suburban schools in Greece. Comparisons were made of (a) the patterns of errors: letter substitutions, orientation errors sequential errors; and phonemic discrimination errors;(b) the most frequent letter substitution confusions; and (c) the effect of a letter's position in the word on its chances of being read incorrectly. The “Olympos Test”; and associated software; developed by the authors; was used for the collection and processing of data. The test was constructed with a view to examining the decoding ability of beginning readers with a substantial degree of reliability and validity and was based on the “MeLeod Phonics Test" Analysis showed that high phonological similarity could lead to a high rate of confusion and different rates of confusion were influenced by the position of the letter in the word. |
