Inhoud: It is essential to adapt and improve tourism supply in order to respond to new tourist demand dynamics. An empirical research was carried out to find out the factors which, in the view of Portuguese hoteliers, were of importance to the development and progress of the activity. Hotel managers and owners' attitudes related to different aspects such as: the role of Tourist Boards, co-operation with other units and co-operative spirit, measures to enhance hotel service were analyzed. The results suggest that the level of importance attributed to the role of Tourist Boards in the development of the hotel industry is generally regarded as relevant. There is some receptivity to aspects of co-operation and co-operative spirit. The implementation of measures that allow a hotel to offer a better supply, facing competition, as well as meeting the demands of the market are fairly important. The different factors contributing to the development of the hotel industry can be summed up as follows: co-operation with other units; differentiated service and customization; varied support from Governmental Boards; support to training; attractiveness of the area where the unit is located; family backing and commitment of the manager to the firm capital; support to marketing; tax exemption and incentives; promotion and widening of service range.
