Inhoud: In this paper, we generate a model that seeks to identify those factors that influence Australian Resident Short Term Departures (ARSTDs) to Greece. More specifically, the main aim is to discover and quantify relationships between ARSTDs and come important determinant factors such as the disposable income, the price of tourism and the attractiveness of Greece as a tourist destination in relation to the rest of Europe. Work of this kind is important (especially from the point of view of the Greek Tourist Organization) in the light of empirical evidence tends to reveal a decline in the proportion of the total Australian travellers abroad for short term visits that state Greece as their main destination. This has taken place despite the presence of a dynamic Greek community in Australia whose strong relations (cultural and financial) with Greece should have induced a remarkable growth in ARSTDs to Greece. This slow-down in the ARSTDs to Greece can be reversed by developing appropriate policies and marketing strategies. However, it should be recognised that planning that is based on merely intuitive speculations without a market analysis and research is usually deemed to fail. In this spirit, we develop and estimate a model for ARSTDs to Greece that can be used for the purpose of developing appropriate policies and marketing strategies.
