Inhoud: Evidence indicates the importance of cognitive-behavioral approaches for the treatment of tobacco dependence among adults, used either alone or in combination with pharmacotherapy. However, there are few reports of behavioral approaches for teenage tobacco cessation. The objective of the clinic-based predominantly cognitive-behavioral therapeutic approach described herein is to help teenagers better manage life stressors by using effective and adaptive coping skills, while identifying and addressing specific factors that lead either to smoking or maintaining abstinence from smoking behavior. Multidimensional heterogeneity and high level of clinical challenge presented by teenage smokers favor the development of a novel approach. Adolescents' orientation to peers suggests that group participation might enhance adherence to the treatment process. The clinic environment and specific group exercises that empower teens to take control of multiple dimensions of cessation are discussed along with suggested session goals and content.
