Evaluating the “Asian Culture/Asian Success” Hypothesis

Title: Evaluating the “Asian Culture/Asian Success” Hypothesis
Author: Adams, F. Gerard
Vernon, Heidi
Appeared in: Journal of Asia-Pacific business
Paging: Volume 8 (2007) nr. 4 pages 5-20
Year: 2007-12-20
Contents: East Asia's rapid economic growth has frequently been explained in terms of Asian cultural considerations-the “Asian Culture/Asian Success” hypothesis. This paper examines the basis for this thinking from various disciplinary perspectives and raises questions about the information required to test it. Macro level inference is not conclusive in view of the many factors operating-some economic, some historic, and some cultural-and the inability to replicate the relevant experiences over time. Micro level tests are challenging but, perhaps, more promising. At the individual respondents' level, it will be necessary to develop information about individual and social cultural views, business behaviors, and their implications for business results. Such data may make it possible to trace the effects of culture on economic performance but may not provide a clear test of the “Asian Culture/Asian Success” thesis.
