Since 1980, China's economy has grown by almost 10% a year-doubling an astonishing three times. During its ascent, China has far outperformed Japan's 1980s “economic miracle.” It has also significantly outperformed the vaunted “Four Dragons”-Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore-during a similar time frame. While China's rapid growth has helped to lift the country into a budding prosperity and provided numerous opportunities for Asian business activities, this article focuses on how China's growth is also putting the country into direct conflict with the rest of the world on a number of important fronts. The conflicts, each of which have with important implications for business and the broader global economy, include those over intellectual property, energy, raw materials, and both regional and global environmental resources. They also include a number of internal conflicts that may ultimately threaten the stability of the government. The overarching purpose of this article is to sensitize business interests and policymakers to not only the many rewards of a rising China, but also a number of significant risks.
