An important development in U.S. capital markets during the past decade has been the rapid growth of the market for American depositary receipts (ADRs). More than 1400 ADRs are now available. Of those, 40% have been issued by firms from the Asia-Pacific region. However, there has never been a rigorous examination of the nature and performance of ADRs issued by Asia-Pacific firms. The first part of this study examines patterns and trends of ADR utilization within the Asia-Pacific region: by country; by industry; by security exchange; and by “sponsorship,” i.e., the role played by the issuing company. The second part of the study examines the risk-adjusted returns which have accrued to Asia-Pacific ADRs listed on the New York Stock Exchange and the NASDAQ during the 1991-94 period. |
