Contents: Samples of middle managers in Japanese and U.S. banking institutions were surveyed. The importance that they attach to work relative to other life activities, as well as their work outcome preferences were measured and compared. Work was found to be of central importance to both samples; it was rated first among life interests by the Japanese managers and second by the Americans. Family was important to both as well; the Americans rated it first, and the Japanese second. Further results and implications are dis- cussed in relation to the existing literature.
