A recent article by Seligson (1993) contended that the current inlrafamilial child sexual abuse treatments are driven by legal concerns, ignore the needs and complex feelings of rhe child, and rarely consider rapprochement. A survey was conducted of 41 therapists at a major urban outpatient clinic at which 25% of the cases seen involve child sexual abuse. Results of the survey do not support any of Seligson's major contentions. A majority of therapists ranked legal matters as their lowest priority, while ranking "child clinical priorities" as first. Therapists had a syong commitment to involving perpetrators when possible, and therapists were sensitive to varying degrees of cooperation or resistance; and Ule complexity of needs involved for the child. |
