Inhoud: Many curricula to prevent child sexual abuse have been implemented, but few have been adequately evaluated. One methodological problem that has ben virtually ignored in extant evaluations is the effects that a pretest might have on children's post-test scores. Research in other fields has demonstrated positive pretest sensitization effects: post-test scores increase when subjects are pre-tested. A Solomon four-group design was used to assess the effects of pretesting on the knowledge gain of preschoolers participating in a prevention curriculum. One hundred twenty-one preschoolers were assessed using the "What If" Situation Test (WIST), a measure which uses short vignettes with accompanying pictures to assess children's knowledge of prevention skills. Analyses of six WIST variables showed mixed results for pretest sensitization. Pretesting abuse sitations, but other prevention skills seem unaffected by pretesting. The implications of these findings for future program evaluations are discussed.
