Jewish Family Service of Worcester, Inc. has been assuming legal guardianship of adjudicated incompetent elders since 1982. In past ten years, it has developed a model of social service agency guardianship that incorporates the social work goals of client advocacy, respect for client dignity, and the right of self-determination. Within the guardianship program, a process for medical decision-making for incapacitated elders has been developed. The program promotes a team approach to the "substituted judgment" and "best interests" models of decision-making and includes ethical considerations and client/family preferences. |
