The paper outlines the origins and growth of the French-speaking people of Saskatchewan, the Fransaskois: their arrival in the eighteenth century, their growth in the nineteenth, their decline in the first half of the twentieth century, and the current revival, which can be dated to the 1960s. Despite the considerable gains made since then, formidable legal and constitutional obstacles remain, with the result that the future of the Fransaskois, now only 2% of the population of the province, is far from certain.
